    Hi Jake,

Yeah, I think I get where you’re coming from with your response above.
I think being a bit self-congratulatory is more than totally fine given what you’ve created and accomplished here. I have a lot of gratitude that I found this program.

The good news is, the flurry is mostly over and I’ve been able to back off and resume regular activities. I’ve noticed that my vision is starting to clear up, even my night vision, which is still blurrier than I’d like, but better than it was a week ago.

I got my cm back up to 20.5 yesterday, measurement taken immediately after some relaxed, glasses-free distance looking while sitting at a coffee house.

I noticed that in the lessons you do encourage forlks to ask questions on the forum…so I guess we can file this (and me) under the “be careful what you ask for” department. 😉

    1. That thing I do that I’ve been talking about, which I now suspect is half active focus and half double vision clearing, during distance work/no glasses:
It FEELS as though it’s helping my eyes. It feels like they’re working and actually bringing something in to clear(er) vision. I have a hard time thinking that my ciliary muscles aren’t actually doing something good, when that’s happening. But I’d like to know what you think–in moderation (which is assured of by my busy schedule), is that little thing I do, likely to be helping my eyes?

    2. I think my current differential (which is 1.5 diopters below my absolute worst day, worst case prescription of negative 7 diopters) is pretty good for when I use my laptop. But sometimes when I don’t have my laptop with me, I use my iPad, or iPhone, both of which I tend to hold closer. Should I just strive to make the habit of pushing my iPad further away from me, so that it’s closer to the edge of my diopter bubble? I don’t think I should adopt a 3rd pair of glasses for iPad use, right?

    3. So with your response above, are you saying this?
That this program is designed for busy, strong headed independent people like me, and life happens, with all its challenges; and so, with the steady building of these new good awareness and habits, my capacity to avoid or pull myself out of major eye strain crashes, will increase?

OK, time to get back to work. thanks as always for your support.

Ok. I’m pretty sure I just cleared some close up blur, actually while reading the lessons just now. That’s good. Ok, I’m 95% sure I just did it again, while pausing during typing this. Yeah!! Nailed it!! 3x!!

Aside from that, I found myself bursting into tears as I read the lesson on taking a good look at close up habits. Why?

Well, let’s get to the real reason I started this thread. To check in after a busy period, yes. Absolutely.

But I also realized that I’ve felt mildly terrified and out of control over the past few weeks. I felt like I was caught up in this torrent of work and there were hours of necessary close up, and I couldn’t stop myself from just burying myself in the work and plowing through it. Which is how I generally like to do work, just really power through it, and I do have a ton of power and stamina. But my eyes don’t; and really, this method of working is truly lousy for my whole body anyway. But I fell into old habits. Despite knowing, better than 99% of Western humans, exactly what that does to my eyes.

I’ve been under a lot of stress, with all this life/work stuff happening at once. Oh–nearly forgot. I ALSO started a new consulting job yesterday, and thus I’d had to spend several hours preparing a presentation. Which went great, but…it’s been endless close work, and lots of stress; and there were times I couldn’t stop myself from then going home and self soothing my stress with the Internet. At the expense of my poor eyes. Which makes me very sad; and which caused what I like to call relief tears: when we finally perceive safety or a solution, hence can let go of the stuffed, numbed out emotion we’ve been carrying.

So I’ll take your suggestion to log close time for a week and begin cutting it down by maybe 20%. And definitely more outside time, which nourishes my soul anyway.

I am really grateful for your coaching. You are totally right on it, every nuance, at least as far as my experience and quirky brain are concerned.

    Thanks Jake!!

I think maybe what I’m doing is both??

It is willful–I can clearly will it to happen, and those are the best ones; though sometimes it happens on its own, like a clear flash. I can kinda feel my eyes doing something, I think maybe in their front chamber, where the ciliary muscle is?

But the clearing does happen with kind of a stare, and it always goes away when I blink.
Sometimes it begins when I blink and begin to will the clarity. Sometimes it happens when I stare (also willing the clarity).
Like so many of these things, it’s kinda hard to describe.

Yes, will keep trying the closer active focus.

So don’t worry about which one it is, blur or double vision (or maybe both)?

Here’s a possible issue. I was mostly using a conventional laptop when I selected my differential.

Now I’m doing more iPad use because of my office problem (laptop too heavy and cumbersome to haul around to various offices with me).

As you know, we tend to hold iPads closer than laptops. So to get near blur horizon, I keep having to unnaturally hold my iPad at arms length. Which I often forget to do, especially while typing. So I might unintentionally be doing a small bit of hyperopic defocus.

Not sure about weakening this prescription though, as I still do use my laptop at times.

(Although my iPad clearly has a better screen, Retina display, and that’s good.)

    Any suggestions?

    Good points, Jake!

I must say, my screen use is much less than it had been; and now with more breaks.

Also, my eyes complain about abuse much more than they used to, another factor driving reduced screen time. My eyes are Making it more difficult to abuse them.

And I am doing a lot more audio books/podcasts/having my Ipad read me my Kindle books.

Is that pretty much what you’re getting at? 🙂

    Hey there! Welcome aboard!

I think I’m in very nearly the same boat as you! Only I started this program about 2 weeks ago, also after a ton of Bates work; and I’m starting closer to -7. No astigmatism though. I was started in glasses at about age 6. 🙁

Oh! And I too had an ophthalmologist like your good one. Looks back on it. I kinda suspect mine actually knew about all these studies Jake cites, and understood thst excess correction leads to weaker eyes. I think he’s the only one I’ve ever met who was like that.

I too am seriously considering a PhD, only I feel thst I need to fix my eyes first. My dad is around -14 in his one sort-of-functioning eye, and apparently he’s eventually going to be losing that too. So I have some imperative to really help my eyes heal from all the damage I inadvertently did to them, following the conventional way.

I can tell you that yesterday I noticed that my eyes are definitely feeling better than they have in a long time, maybe ever. They also seemed to be functioning better in low light. Maybe you noticed something similar, as you’re a few weeks ahead of me in the lessons.

Anyway, it’d be great to stay in touch and maybe be eye buddies as we work on all this!

Hey, ok, so I just wanted to stop in and say…

Today, after just over 1 week of this program, I noticed that my eyes are definitely feeling better.

Wasn’t expecting that; it hadn’t even occurred to me that I might have that subjective experience. But it was undeniable. They just feel more relaxed and…well, better. I can feel them more, and it’s not at all unpleasant.

Forgot to do my cm measurements today. I’m still having office issues, having to move between offices, so forgot to bring my measuring tools with me. But as of yesterday I’m maintaining 4-5 cm improvement.

I also noticed that my eyes are handling lower light or poor quality light better.
No more freak outs or strain, like I wrote about before.
Visual clarity using my slightly reduced distance prescription has been really good (except late at night while tired).

I feel like my eyes are happy that I’m no longer inadvertently creating hyperoptic defocus; and thst I am using this still not entirely dialed in, but much better, differential prescription for closer work.

Already, a million times thank you!!

    Thanks Jake!!

New update: got eye chart mounted. It’s an old one I got from Meir, so no instructions with it. It’s not huge and I’m guessing it’s a 3m chart.

Cloudy day, but direct outdoor light shining through window towards chart at 5pm.
From 9 feet away, I can see 6 of its 9 lines.
Using the current normalized pair of glasses I posted above, -6.5/-6.25.

What measurement does that give me? Is it still good for now?

Also, I got a light meter app that measures in lux, on my smart phone. But the numbers vary too wildly for me to make any sense of it. Am I missing something?

    Oh. And:

I might see someone in my office for 50 min at a distance of, say, 6 feet away, using my -6.5/-6.25 glasses. Then I have to write a note on them. It’s a legal document, so requires some concentration and accuracy, which is also the reason I tend to write them right away rather than waiting till later when I have to recall 5 or 6 or more sessions after several hours. So for that writing, on computer or iPad, I switch to my -5.5/-5.25 pair. Then after 5-10 min it’s back to my -6.5 to see the next person. Not ideal, now thst I know about focal plane shifts, but it’s what I’ve been doing. Is there anything bad or harmful in this routine, that I need to change now?

Ok. So here are my actual questions:

Right now, as I sit outside on a patio, just having actively focus pulled in my new friend the black & white speed limit sign, my cm measurement is 20.5. By the measurements I’ve done for the last 3 weeks since finding your site, this is my (beginning) happy maximum. It was around 14-15 when I very first found your site.

Waking up in the AM this week, I’ve been around 18-19 cm. Both eyes are essentially the same with infrequent minor variations. Historically, my right eye needs 0.25 more/stronger diopters than the left, so all pairs of my glasses account for this, with the R lens always 0.25 stronger.

Since poking around your blog before joining, and finding the 1.5 diopter suggestion, my current differential is -5.5 (R lens) diopters. Since at my worst I was right around -7 diopters (R). My current distance glasses are -6.5 diopters (L -6.25) and I often have to go up 0.25 diopters for night driving.

I do have an eye chart but haven’t had the time yet to find a good accurate indoor (or outdoor) place to mount it according to your suggestions. So I haven’t yet started messing around with that, though I will soon.

Are those current beginning differential and normalized pairs of glasses good enough for now, for my purposes where I currently am in this program? I’m about 1 week in. I understand we’ll dial em in better later.
