    Hey Jake,

Been awhile since I’ve posted. To make a long story short, I reduced my norms in March and felt close to being ready to reduce in June/July but then moved abroad and for 2 weeks or so I just had cell phone internet until I got home internet installed so I used my phone a lot and of course made ciliary spasm. I figured it would take time to reduce the spasm and get back to where I was but now it’s October and my Snellen still wasn’t 20/20 in the lighting I was using.

Frustrated, I was curious about the lux of my testing environment (small hallway with one overhead light) (Note, I never used the lux meter for anything which was dumb in hindsight). Anyway, it came back at around 35 which is obviously not what a proper environment is for testing. I moved the Snellen around in the apartment and the lux now read around 300 when I tested it. At 300 I could easily see 20/20 and maybe 20/15.

I have read differing things on Le Meow and I don’t think it’s clearly mentioned in 20/20 or the guide (just to take the measurement in indoor lighting – which I took to the extreme, of course, by going to 35 lux). So what lux should I be testing at to determine if I can reduce when I reach 20/20? I can manipulate it a lot and have options since I can make it 500 or 1k lux easily by putting it just barely outside and looking from inside still.

I just measured the testing area for my cm and I get 1500-2k lux which is obviously quite different. With that setup I get ~28cm in my left and ~31cm in my right. My norms are -4.5 + cyl. So there is obviously quite a discrepancy there. Back home I did something similar and just put it in a dark hallway with a single light so perhaps this has caused me to use more diopters than needed. I can still active focus when outside etc but perhaps it is taking me to under 20/20 vision? My cm did improve from where they were at home (around 26-28) so there was improvement it seems.

Last question, when I test my norms at the new lux and get 20/20, since I may be overcorrected (and for so long starting from March), should I reduce to the norms that give me 20/40 or just reduce the typical .25 as normal?

    Thanks

Tether that phone and use its internet for your laptop. No excuse to be on the phone a lot! 🙂

300 lux indoor is great. 30, not as much.

I’d be inclined to just reduce 0.25. “Worst” case scenario it’s conservative and you still see nicely and it’ll be an easy step down on the way.

I don’t have a laptop, just a PC and a huge monitor with no way to connect it with the internet at the time. But now that’s all good and proper habits have been in place for a while and I don’t use the phone as much as possible.

Should I continue with the 300 lux going forward or put the Snellen in another lux environment? It may be good to give me a range of acceptable lux to test in because I am right on the water with the terrace and the sun’s light comes in at very varying amounts. While I can move the chart to give it more or less lux, sometimes it may not be exactly around 300 based on if it’s cloudy or the position of the sun etc. It does mean I have to keep testing with the lux meter to make sure each time I test but that is fine.

Also, at what lux range should I be testing my cm? The same as the Snellen or different? Again, lots of options here.

I’ll do a .25 reduction as scheduled, thanks.

Eye chart is just a handy ‘translator’ of how far you see clearly.

The lux for that, another variable that depends on your regular visual environment. Yes vision will vary quite a lot depending on lighting. If you change lighting, try to be consistent, keep a note in the log. Beyond that, it’s what you prefer and what environment you are looking to replicate / simulate when you do tests.

Again 300 lux is good indoor lighting. 🙂

      Hey Jake,

This has nothing to do with this topic but instead about your post on potentially moving to Spain in the forum. I guess I don’t have enough posts to post in that section since I just lurk but I wanted to help out since we have somewhat similar situations (both traders, both moved abroad and speak English and can travel and work remotely).

I just moved from the US to one of the island regions in Italy called Sardegna. Most have never heard of it (most only know of Sicily). I like it better this way for numerous reasons but anyway..

If you are looking for a somewhat tropical area in the EU free of covid bs and with a potentially new and friendly national government here in Italy, with modern infrastructure and low crime, kitesurfing, sea, mountains, etc all easily accessible then it might be for you. So far after almost 4 months it has been the right move for someone like me. Granted, I speak B2 level Italian and am entirely Italian but you can get by with English especially during summer months and Italian isn’t too hard to learn.

Crime is low, people are welcoming, not crowded whatsoever, lots of beaches and clean water. Modern technology and infrastructure and health system to do blood work etc. Can get anything online still easily ad quickly. Cheap for people with foreign incomes. No migrant problems here due to geography vs. the mainland of Italy and the EU. I could see you here for sure and obviously could help you out if you ever did decide to come here.

Might not be as warm as where you are year-round but not as bad as Germany and on par or better than Spain for sure. I have a 3bed 2 bath place with kitchen right on the water (amazing view) for 1100/month in a main city in a residential area and everything is walkable. Motorcycle/bike culture is alive here (it’s Italy after all) (know you like that). Cuisine here is NOT for vegans at all and they eat more meat than the mainland but also obviously pasta is here as well etc but you have quality options even at the supermarket here.

Some things do take longer to do here and get adjusted to because it’s Italy but honestly has been bad where I’m at. With your EU passport you’ll be good here.

Anyway, just felt like I had to reach out and let you know this was an option. Any questions you can hit me up here or email me (think my email is listed for you to see as an admin).

Hugely appreciate you sharing these insights – that does sound like an amazing place. Kite surfing, Italian attitudes, and food. 😎

Added to the very short list.
